The Association of Licensed Architects (ALA) announced its 21st annual Design Awards winners, which recognized projects for design and construction achievement. They include an Iowa brewery, biotechnology company headquarters, school play garden, condominium building in Chicago and health center.
A total of 43 awards were presented in commercial, institutional, residential, religious, interior and unbuilt categories. The highest honor, the Don Erickson Presidential Award, went to Singlespeed Brewery in Waterloo, Iowa. The project, a brewery, beer hall, restaurant and retail space, was designed by Mike Bechtel of Invision Architecture, Waterloo. Judges lauded the project for its adaptive reuse of a historic 1927 bakery building, noting its appealing expression of structural elements. The project also received a Silver Award in the Commercial category.
Gold Award winners included: Buchanan County Outpatient Unit Expansion, Independence, Iowa, by INVISION Architecture, Waterloo,; CA Washington Condominiums, Chicago, by SGW Architects, Chicago; Latin School Play Garden, Chicago, by Level Architecture, and Unisphere, Silver Spring, Md., by EwingCole, Philadelphia.
“We were inspired by this year’s many award winners and the gathering of so many firms at the awards dinner,” said Joanne Sullivan, ALA executive director. “Our judges praised Presidential and Gold Award winning projects, in particular, for qualities such as use of color and light and innovative, purposeful design.”
ALA 2019 Design Awards entries were evaluated by a panel of judges including Stephen Bruns, ALA, principal, Bruns Architecture, Milwaukee, Joseph Geoghegan, Jr., ALA, NCARB, chief architect and principal, RGLA, Schiller Park, Ill., Natalie Hicks, AIA, NCARB, Wright Heerema Architects, Chicago, Alfredo Marr, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, principal, Lucien LaGrange Studio, Chicago, and Michelle Rumsa, ALA, Edgewater Resources, St. Joseph, Mich
